Description

Kriophobia is a survival horror in third-person that follows the journey of Anna, a lonesome geophysicist trapped on a mysterious Russian island, where the cold is as deadly as the horrors that await her. Beneath the snow, the island hides a disturbing past, and, as she fights to survive, Anna will need to face buried memories and confront her innermost fears.

History

The first ideas for Kriophobia originated from two personal projects developed internally by the early partners of Fira Soft. After completing a major project for a client, they decided to dedicate a few weeks to original experiments. The first project was a survival horror game in the point-and-click style, set in a hospital and played from a child's perspective. Although the team was enthusiastic about the theme, the project’s scope proved unfeasible at that time and was shelved.

The second project started as an initiative by a former collaborator, who used relatively new systems, such as Unity's MecAnim and NavMesh, to create a point-and-click game prototype. When another team member saw the prototype, they suggested using it to recreate the original mansion from Resident Evil. During the process, the corridors and camera angles of the classic game were replicated, revealing the potential of what was being built. In this context, the team’s artist redesigned the camera angles from Resident Evil 1 to adapt them to the 3D model in use, utilizing hand-drawn art and 2D cutouts, which are characteristic of survival horror games.

Some tests also explored the visual style of American comic books, with multiple cameras displayed in "panels" simultaneously. The idea of a game with static camera angles and hand-drawn art was so well-received by the team that they decided to create their survival horror based on this concept. And thus, Kriophobia was born.

However, achieving the desired scope and quality required significant investment. For over five years, Fira Soft developed the game sporadically while seeking funding for the project. In 2019, the game was funded by Ancine, through the "Public Call BRDE/FSA PRODAV 14/2017." Since then, Kriophobia has been in continuous development, with a planned release date in 2025.
